Mountain range in Tunnel View, United States

We started making a habit of 7 hour twilight treks from Los Angeles to Yosemite Valley for a day get away. We would periodically arrive in the park an hour or so before sunrise and hope to find sleep before the sun illuminated the park. However, sleep often eluded me during these brief rest periods. A tangible excitement kept my soul from sleeping, brewing within me like a spiritual caffeine. I would recline my seat and unsuccessfully attempt to dose off. Inevitably the sun emerged and with it the valley floor coated in a morning mist that floated with mystery waiting to be explored.

Summit in West Glacier, United States

My husband and I were exploring the trail to Hidden Lake in West Glacier, when we spotted a ridge line to our right. We knew it was the perfect spot to wander off the beaten path. We scaled up steep loose rock, boulders tumbling beneath our feet, and followed the mountain’s curves up a more solid incline until we came to a giant rock. It was the mountain’s vertical boundary for us, since crampons were needed to scale any further up into the slick summer glacier slush. Sensing the perfect photo op, my husband hopped up on the rock, dark cliffs looming behind him and this view in front of him.

Volcano in Kīlauea, United States

Seeing lava flow with your own eyes is a rare sight. We drove our car as far as we could until the road ended and then switched to bikes to get to the lookout point. The glasslike rock scratched our skin as we sat and waited for nightfall with our camera equipment. At dusk, we captured this moment where the glowing fire blossomed into clouds of steam as it collided with the lapping waves that crashed against the cliff. We were witnessing the birth of new land and saw the raw power of brute violence of natural creation. There is no clearer evidence that the earth is alive.

Landmark in Statue of Liberty National Monument, United States

In 2014, I took a trip to New York for the cliche and touristy site seeing ventures. On a foggy day, we went to the Statue of Liberty. Trying to create various angles, I stood just a bit off to the side and tilted my camera upwards. After a handful of shots, and shifting the camera’s angel, I saw an airplane in the top left corner of the frame. It appeared and disappeared within the clouds. So, in hopes that I could perhaps capture it near the statue, I took a bunch of photos. Then, this happened. Yes, it’s not perfectly centered between the crown, but still // a new angle on the same statue.

Wildlife in Abiqua Falls, United States

Abiqua falls is difficult to reach. First, you have to reach the middle of nowhere. Then, you take a thoroughly messed up “road” on foot or by car. Finally, you have to scramble down a hill, and about 1/4 mile over rocks next to a river. At least you reach Abiqua. Yeah, it’s worth it. This was by far my favorite waterfall I’ve ever experienced – go if you can do so carefully! The best waterfall experience was followed up with a pretty strange one: a group of people decided to take up target practice with rifles next to our car. This area isn’t a part of a park so it’s unprotected.

Forest in Big Sur, United States

We started off full of energy on our backpacking trip. Dasha the labrador bursting with excitement, running up and down the trail. We hiked up and down and up and down the huge rolling green coastal mountains that are iconic to central California. We trekked through thick forests and crossed icy rivers that were waist deep. Dasha was no longer dancing, she was chugging and I had to take the weight off her dog-pack and carry it in mine. A couple hours before sunset, we found a perfect spot by the water to set up camp. Together we spent the rest of the afternoon chilling with the trees.

Mountain range in June Lake, United States

We were in June Lake for when Michaela had the great idea to try and capture the night sky. We opened up one of our apps that identifies the Milky Way, and we got excited when we saw it was behind the mountain outside our window. We immediately went to a spot where no cars really drive by, set up the tripod, and planned on taking an awesome timelapse. After the test shot finished up, we were disheartened with the clouded Milky Way. Rather than set up a timelapse, we settled for this photo that we grew to love. Life is beautiful, even when things don’t go how you plan.

Wildlife in Asheville, United States

In the surrounding cities of Asheville, NC, you’ll find a variety of farms, from apple tree fields to freely roaming livestock. I pulled the car over to capture a few of the bulls and cows, and their calves. In the far distance, stood one bull in particular (this one). I saw him from a distance, staring me down. I started to capture those near the fence, and after every few photos, I would look up. The bull closer, every time. Then, I looked up and there he was. Death staring me from 20 feet away, at most. I took his photo and slowly went on my way as to let him continue guarding his herd.

Desert in Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park, United States

Sand dunes of different sizes pile up and already now offer a great view. The wind sweeping over the dunes literally makes the sand dance in the sun and creates a very special atmosphere. We like it right away! The dunes are gradually bathed in an increasingly beautiful light as the sun sinks deeper and deeper behind them-while the sand shines golden yellow at the beginning, it shimmers a little later in delicate pink. We just let ourselves drift here, take a walk here and there and enjoy the relaxed and calm atmosphere. Simply a dreamlike conclusion for another beautiful day in the southwest!

Wildlife in Evergreen, United States

My wife and I went to Denver for our honeymoon. While on a hike with friends, we went off the trail to get back to our car. On our way, we saw this fawn resting and stopped to get a few shots of this precious creature. This was the closest that I got to the fawn. Once we got in the car, we saw the mother deer resting across the road. In case you were wondering, if you see a fawn in the woods that looks alone, don’t touch it. The mother will return, the fawn is not abandoned, and the fawn is safe. Fawns do not have a scent that predators can smell, and they remain still.

Ferris wheel in Santa Monica Pier, United States

This photo was taken during an outing with a friend who I had known for seven years, but had never met in person, believe it or not. We befriended each other through online video gaming, and became very close despite being 3,000 miles apart. Fortuitously, as he was training for the US Airforce, he was stationed at a base an hour away from my home. This was a great opportunity to show him around the places I grew up, including the Santa Monica Pier was this photo was taken. Having been born in Santa Monica, I had never thought much of these tourist attractions, but now this sight feels fresh.

Forest in Regional Parks Botanic Garden, United States

I spotted this tranquil place at Regional Park near Berkeley. I was planning to shoot some landscape photo but unfortunately, the day was leaden and cloudy. I wandered among the tall trees and suddenly trod into a place where the lighting and shadow concocted this ethereal scene. It was like a fairyland. I did not edit this photo much other than tweaking its exposure and temperature. I took the hike a weekend before my AP tests, so I was trying to escape from the stress. Hopefully, the photo could give you a shot of relaxing so that you can face your life with equanimity.

Pier in Seattle, United States

What an amazing city. Even though this picture isn’t of the city, it’s always going to remind me of the amazing people and ideas I found there in May 2018. I shot this just before stepping off the Bainbridge ferry at the end of a long day walking around Ballard and Bainbridge Island. Thanks to Dribbble and friends for giving me an excuse to spend a weekend exploring a small piece of the Pacific Northwest. Thanks to Sofia. I want to give a shoutout to my friend Joe (http://www.josephhaubert.com), the stuff he taught me in a class has really upped my photography skills.

Landmark in Brooklyn, United States

This shot was taken on my first trip to NYC late last summer. Brooklyn was near the top of my list of places to check out while I was there. I loved the architecture in this area, it seemed that every corner you turned was filled with another picturesque city street (but maybe that was just the awe of experiencing NYC for the first time hitting me full force). We walked around for hours, exploring as many shops and streets and alleyways as we could before the light started to fade. We hung out in Empire Fulton Ferry Park watching the lights of the financial district slowly come on.

Badlands in Unnamed Road, United States

Me: It's almost dark out, I'm in the middle of huge inland sand dunes and have no idea where the dirt road went, there's a consistent 30 mph wind blowing sand everywhere...now would be the perfect time to get out of my car and fly my drone! I nearly blinded myself from sand blowing in my eyes and the wind was blowing so hard that even at full speed, my drone was still being pushed further away... But I had to capture that texture, the curves, the shadows, and the awesome wisps of sand flying across the desert floor. I think this photo proves my efforts were worth it.

Beach in Marshall's Beach, United States

I got up and drove to the Golden Gate before the crowds. My favorite time of the day. It was around 7AM when I was crossing and capturing the fog over it. I made it to the beach right before sunrise. It was quite, moody, but beautiful. I was not able to see the sun but the sound of the ocean splashing and crashing on the rocks was extraordinary. Waves were not big but felt smooth. It is at that point when I felt the urge to capture that feeling. I put my filters on my camera and took a long exposure shot. The time before the shot, it is the time I treasure and sharing it makes me happy

Hill in Eastern Sierras, United States

Where am I going? I often know exactly where I am and where I want to go, but then look up and think, “How did I get here?” I trust my God, it’s my freewill I don’t trust. Or anyone else’s for that matter. When I’m in this place I feel like all I can think about is my God. I look at His creation and that’s all I can see. The clouds, the mountains, the brush, the cold, the snow, my wife. That last one is one of His finest creations. God help me to never take what You’ve created for granted. I don’t believe You made this so I could sit in a room and pray with my eyes closed. Thank You.

Mountain range in Estes Park, United States

Recently my family and I took a trip to Colorado to relive our days when we were a kid. We used to go there every summer and do the same activities and visit the same places each time. Eventually we grew out of it and started going to different places. 7 years later from the last time we went to Colorado, we decide to go again and I wouldn’t trade this experience for anything. We had a blast and I was able to get some pretty cool pictures along the way as a bonus. This picture brings back so many memories with or me with my family and gives me a sense of peace and relaxation.

Bridge in Bixby Creek Bridge, United States

It’d been a while since I’d had a chance to make it out to the coast for sunrise. I decided to head to Bixby bridge, which is fortunately still accessible after all of the crazy weather earlier this year that caused major road closures a few miles south. When I first arrived at the bridge, it was completely immersed in fog, I couldn’t even see to the other side. I wasn’t hopeful it would clear and thought about moving on. I decided to wait a little longer to see what the fog would do. Within about 10 minutes the fog almost completely cleared away, leaving me with this tremendous view.
